The Politics of a Potential Breakthrough
I’ve been following the news on Dr. Zamboni’s recent discovery of CCSVI but I found today’s article about it in the Huffington Post particularly interesting because it directly addresses the political aspect of this potential breakthrough. In other words, who stands to gain from this discovery, if it proves to be the miracle cure it looks like? Who stands to lose? And how are the motivations of all the players in the MS world influencing whether or not studies for CCSVI get funded? Or whether or not it gets covered by the news? Or whether or not you hear about it by your neurologist?
Having a chronic illness like MS is a powerful wake-up call (for those who choose to hear it) to get that we’re part of an intricate system, and everyone in the health field – from Big Pharma to your neurologist to your loving partner – has their own motivations, fears, and insecurities, many of which could conflict with your effort to get well, in whatever form it comes. MS can be your curse, or it can your blessing – an opportunity to take control of your life in a way you never have before. I know it’s been that for me.
