You’ve Got More Control Than You Think

Reality is a funny thing. You see, most people believe in it. They believe in the R-E-A-L of the word. They believe what they’re experiencing in their life is beyond their control. They believe, with the passion inspired by any dogma, that what they’re experiencing is REAL. Or even worse, TRUE!

This is not a post about quantum physics, nor is it some philosophical discussion. What I care about is giving you something useful to consider as you move through your life, negotiating the sometimes tricky terrain of Multiple Sclerosis, or any chronic illness. This bit of wisdom (dare I call it) is one I was reminded of today as I discussed the Truth of my current predicament with a friend. This friend of mine, he’s someone who believes in Truth quite fervently. As such, he believes my decisions should be based on the Reality of the situation, and they should be clear-cut, simple, and executed resolutely.

Now while I agree that being resolute would be nice right now, it seems that I simply am not. And the reason is that I consider myself to be a reality creator, and thus before I can act based on the “reality” of a situation, I need to ask myself this essential question: Who have I been being that I am having this experience? Would my experience be different if I were being another way?

The Party Rule

Let me explain. Have you ever gone out to a party when you were feeling down about yourself? Saying things in your head like “I’m not attractive, I’m not interesting, no one will want to talk to me, I’m not likeable”? How was that night for you? What I’ll bet is that it was awful. You felt bad, you emanated that, you made yourself seem unattractive as a result, so no one wanted to talk to you. Meanwhile, you were busy sorting for all the evidence that you were indeed unattractive and unlikeable, and you found it. That is masterful reality creating! Congratulations, you have proved that you are, indeed, unlovable!

Ah, but have you ever had the reverse experience? You went out feeling like a hot, sexy, witty, brilliant, all-around-awesome person and you had an amazing night? This is how we build our realities. It doesn’t happen from the outside in, it happens from the inside out. So as I consider this important decision in my life right now, the question I MUST ask myself is (again): Who have I been being that I am having this experience? Would my experience be different if I were being another way?

You Have More Control Than You Think!

You have more control over your reality than you think. What is the experience you’re having of your illness right now? If it’s a negative one, if you’re not happy with your life right now, ask yourself the crucial questions I have been asking myself (repetition is good here): Who have I been being that I am having this experience? Would my experience be different if I were being another way?

How do you need to be to have a positive experience of your illness? What sorts of thoughts does that person say to themselves? What are they sorting for out in the world? Are they looking for how their illness is an opportunity, or are they sorting for how their illness limits them?

You CAN change your experience by changing how you are being. If you want some amazing inspiration to illustrate this point, watch the TED video below of music composer Benjamin Zander talking about music and passion. It’s beautiful, and you’ll get it.
