The Winter is Killing Me

I was born on April 24th. Apparently that makes me a shoe-in for MS. In today’s UK Telegraph online, it read “Scientists found mothers who were pregnant during the autumn and winter were most likely to give birth to those who would suffer from the debilitating neurological disease.” Awesome! The Scotland-based study, published in the European Journal of Neurology, suggests that “the spike in cases among children born in the spring may be due to a shortage of vitamin D because during a vital developmental stage their mothers are exposed to less sunshine. “Vitamin...

MS Warrior Profile #3

MS Warrior: noun A person who shows or has shown great vigor or courageĀ  in an activity, cause, or conflict, as in living a kick-ass, purposeful life despite – or, oftentimes, because of, having Multiple Sclerosis. I was thrilled to come across an article in Marie Claire online about a woman named Kate Milliken, who was diagnosed with MS in 2006 and successfully reversed it using a combination of traditional and holistic approaches and an attitude of hardcore determination and positive thinking. You can find the article here. I was even more thrilled to...

2 1/2 Years and No Progression

Yesterday I had an appointment with my neurologist, who I’ll refer to from here forward as Dr. N. This was my second appointment with him. My first was a month earlier, when I explained that I had been treating my MS with diet and supplements alone, and LDN beginning in March of 2009, and hadn’t been to a neurologist in a year and a half because I found my last one to be a condescending jerk. I had explained that I wasn’t coming to him with the intention of beginning a drug regimen, but...

The Politics of a Potential Breakthrough

I’ve been following the news on Dr. Zamboni’s recent discovery of CCSVI but I found today’s article about it in the Huffington Post particularly interesting because it directly addresses the political aspect of this potential breakthrough. In other words, who stands to gain from this discovery, if it proves to be the miracle cure it looks like? Who stands to lose? And how are the motivations of all the players in the MS world influencing whether or not studies for CCSVI get funded? Or whether or not it gets covered by the news? Or...

MS Warrior: noun A person who shows or has shown great vigor or courageĀ  in an activity, cause, or conflict, as in living a kick-ass, purposeful life despite – or, oftentimes, because of, having Multiple Sclerosis. The following is excerpted from the article “The proven power of giving, not getting” posted by Jessica Ravitz on CNN.com onDecember 14, 2009 9:15 a.m. EST: One person who can attest to the power of giving is Cami Walker, a 36-year-old woman who received a prescription to give when her multiple sclerosis , a diagnosis she got at...

MS Warrior: noun A person who shows or has shown great vigor or courageĀ  in an activity, cause, or conflict, as in living a kick-ass, purposeful life despite – or, oftentimes because of, having Multiple Sclerosis. Patricia Lay-Dorsey is an excellent example of someone living with MS, but not defined by it. She’s not a victim, nor is she allowing her illness to prevent her from being on her path. At 67 she’s having a love affair with her newfound passion, photography, despite her disability. She’s taken the reality of her life with MS...
